abstract
this paper, based on the theories and principles of the translation method and psycholinguistics, holds the view that the translation method can still be of considerable effect nowadays, complying with the inexorable trend of educational reform and development, and explores a better combination that the translation method and middle school english quality-oriented education can enter into.
it starts with a comment upon practice of teaching and a survey of the teaching approaches actually used in middle schools. through careful and extensive analysis of the features of the method and the social needs, the author concludes that this method is practical and of great life force, and then presents that possible development may be made to comply with the new teaching system. the author also makes an attempt to support the conclusion by some samples in practice (e.g., combination with the teaching-as-a-whole method; combination with the cultural studies; practice in the oral training; practice in the writing training), in hopes of pouring new vigor into english teaching approaches of middle schools and making use of them to the maximum extent.
