n flames deep inside the Mont Blanc tunnel that links France and Italy. The fire quickly engulfed some 30 other vehicles and burned for two days before firefighters finally put it out. (Newsweek, April 5, 1999)
-- Israeli forces say they killed at least 100 Palestinians and captured nearly 700 others, including some on Israel’s list of terror suspects. Dozens of civilians perished, some crushed by falling walls, others in the cross fire.(Time, May 6, 2002)
--Sporadic sniper fire and several rounds of artillery shells pounded the centre of the Bosnian capital of Sarajevo yesterday while the latest UN peace talks were about to start in New York.
Sarajevo reporters said artillery shells slammed into the city several times during the early morning. Random sniper fire could be heard around Sarajevo’s city centre.(The international Herald Tribune, Feb. 5, 1993)
--As skyrocketing prices of certain staples recently returned to earth, inflation seems to be easing. The Hindu rightist BJP faces an uphill battle. Exports and growth are sluggish, and there has been no major progress on privatization. Indeed, the economy has not been in such bad shape since 1991, when an acute foreign-exchange shortage forced New Delhi to go hat in hand to the International Monetary Fund, promising to speed up reform. (Asiaweek, Jan.15, 1999)
